Abstract:
This work is focused on what I have called ‘simultaneous linguistic adaptation’ for theatres in general and for operas in particular. The concept of simultaneous linguistic adaptation is quite a simple one, since it covers all the systems adopted by North-American and European theatres aiming at a real-time translation of the libretto for the audience. In the first two chapters, I will analyse all these systems, notably surtitling (the most spread one) but also other devices designed in the United States of America, in France and in the United Kingdom. After a technical analysis, I will match the characteristics of each of them with the needs not only of spectators but also of theatre directors, singers, conductors and music directors. Then, I will have a look at the instruments the adapter is equipped with and at the related technical constraints. In an other chapter, I will conclude my technical analysis by comparing two different, but very similar, techniques: subtitles for TV screens and surtitles. As far as the last chapter is concerned, I will concentrate particularly on the preparation phase of the files for surtitling, which is probably the most important phase as the quality of surtitles depends, primarily, on this. At the same time, I will refer to theoretical aspects in general and to linguistic ones in particular as the latter are profoundly and intimately linked to the surtitler’s profession. I will conclude my work with a short glossary which will facilitate the comprehension not only of this work, but also of future works dealing with surtitling.
