Abstract:

This dissertation is part of a broader project, called Subtitle Project, headed by Prof. Rundle. The main aim of the Subtitle Project and is to collect and analyse data concerning Italian subtitling agencies and their standards. Each participant has been given the possibility to use collected data in order to develop a personal project for their dissertations. As for this dissertation, we decided to write subtitles for the first thirty minutes of the film Goldfish Memory: an Irish film by Liz Gill not released in Italy yet. The subtitles have been carried out as if part of a DVD release of the film and they have been written trying to recreate the “working conditions” of a professional subtitler. That is the reason why we decided to use a specific software which enabled us to create a CD with the film and the superimposed subtitles, thus giving us a better idea of whether the subtitles actually worked when on the film. What distinguishes this project from a real subtitler’s job though is the time available. Contrary to what happens in real life, we had no deadlines and we took all the time we needed to read and analyse different audiovisual translation studies in order to understand how differently the professional subtitler works compared to what the main studies in the field preach. In the first part of this dissertation we present an historical overview of Irish cinema and an introduction to the main European institutions supporting independent cinema and directors. The second chapter deals with the film itself, its director, its characters, setting and plot. In chapter III, the project underlying this dissertation is described in detail, the different layout choices made for the subtitles of Goldfish Memory are listed here. A complete transcription of the original dialogues with subtitles is also included in this chapter. The fourth chapter deals with choices about the language used for subtitles. We aim to demonstrate how the absence of a deadline allowed the subtitler of Goldfish Memory to analyse in depth her work and to find a compromise between what happens in real life and the academic purpose of this dissertation.
