Abstract:
This dissertation is about subtitling and is part of a project called Subtitle Project, whose aim is to study the market of subtitling in Italy. The author of this paper decided to write Italian subtitles for some scenes of the American film Notting Hill, released in 1999, trying to recreate the working conditions of a professional subtitler. We decided to write subtitles suitable for a DVD version of the film. In order to recreate real working conditions, we decided to employ a software, Subtitle Workshop, which is very similar to the professional ones. This software has a visual interface which allows the superimposition of subtitles on the screen and allows you to set the standards for subtitles, such as the font, the length of the lines, and the duration of subtitles. After a brief introduction about multimedia translation and the different kinds of subtitling, the author presents the subtitles of the film and comments the strategies used.
