Abstract:
Since the beginning of cinema history, there has always been the need to overwhelm language barriers. Subtitling is one of the techniques used for that. This dissertation presents a proposal of subtitling for the film: “Wilbur wants to kill himself” (2002) directed by Lone Sherfig. The work is structured as follows: the first part focuses on the origins of cinema translation and presents European and Italian situation as far as audiovisual translation is concerned. It also includes the description of the two methods used for film subtitling. The second part deals with the technique of subtitling, its features and its constraints. The third part presents the author’s experience as a translator at the “Umbria film festival”, describing the stages of the film subtitling. The fourth part consists of the commentary on the decisions and the strategies adopted by the translator.
